Now I Get It . . . But It’s Too Late For Me.

“If only I would have realized how important grades are for getting into college and for earning scholarships . . . “

Sadly, I hear this from numerous high seniors every year. Over the next several weeks, many of these senior year students are going to watch their peers get accepted to their top choice colleges with offers of tens of thousands of dollars in campus-based “recruitment” scholarships.

What many senior students don’t realize is there are two parts to college admission: (1) getting accepted for admission to college and (2) earning scholarships and grants to pay for college. It is an established fact that high school grades are the most important factor considered for both admission and receiving merit-based scholarships; this is documented in the 2008 State of College Admission (National Association for College Admission Counseling, September 2008, p.2).

Juniors, sophomores and freshman students – Learn from the seniors who regret not making the effort to do well in high school. Students that work hard to do their best in high school typically reap the rewards of their efforts by getting accepted to the 4-year colleges and universities of their choice, usually with significant financial aid awards. Make the effort to do well throughout your high school career and when you apply for college, you won’t have any regrets.
