I successfully finished my first quarter of graduate school at UCLA about two weeks ago and because the first quarter is now complete, and because 2008 is now just a memory, I have been reflecting on the past year of controlled chaos that has been my life.
This time last year, I was writing and rewriting, and editing and re-editing my graduate admissions essay. I was scrambling around, getting my transcripts, bugging professors for letters of recommendation, and filling out applications. To think all that stress was only a year ago!
Although MyCollegeCalendar.org is currently geared toward undergraduate admissions, using its model was a lifesaver for me. I do not think I would have been accepted to the schools I was accepted to without MCC. I decided to apply to my program pretty late (July or August, I believe) and without MCC's structured agenda, I would have been completely lost. I would not have known when to file my FAFSA, or when to have my essay drafts finished. MCC kept me on track, and had me consider things I otherwise would not have known about.
So, for all of you undergrads and future undergrads out there, keep this process in the back of your mind… grad school may not be that far off for you, either!
